In between tearing up the
stage at Big Day Out, Groovin’ The Moo, Pyramid Rock Festival, selling out
their own shows and supporting the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Girls and Cage
The Elephant, triple j next croppers Loon Lake have been busy writing and
recording and are thrilled to announce the release of their next single
Cherry Lips. Resplendent with driving riffs, rolling vocals and peppered
with just the right amount of handclaps, Cherry Lips is a laconic pop gem
that galvanizes Loon Lake’s reputation as one’s to watch in 2012. They are
going to hit the road for their tour starting in August with Cub Scouts and
Glass Towers as their supporting acts !
Who makes up your band? Sam, Sime, Dan, Tim &
Where are you guys from? We are all from Wangaratta
originally except for Dan who is from Melbourne but we are based in Melbourne
Who’s your music inspiration? There are like a million. I
think Kanye West is the coolest. He is one hundred per cent devoted to
making good music; his label is called G.O.O.D. music. And he is always at
the front of the game. I much rather when artists take their influence
from whats around them rather than just what was in the past.
He definitely does that.
Can you tell us how did your band form? Well three of us are brothers
and the other two are friends of ours. We had always played music together
then all ended up in Melbourne at the same time a couple of years back and
decided to have a proper go at it!
What's the story behind your band's name? It was the title of a book
that Sam found when he was travelling in Central America. Its also the
name of a few lakes and towns in Canada and the US. We thought it had a
great aesthetic so we went with it.
What kind of bands are you guys into at the
moment? We are all into different stuff!
But the albums that we are looking forward to right now are probably those
from the Dirty Projectors, Frank Ocean, The xx, Tame Impala, the G.O.O.D.
music one. Also Sam has been going through a bit of a sixties girl group
phase. Stuff like The Ronettes and The Supremes and those.
What are you working on at the moment? At the minute we are working
on getting our live show cranking. We are touring in August so that’s our
main focus right now. But still we are writing heaps and will be focusing
on an album soon.
If you could collaborate with any musician, who
would it be and why? That’s a question that is
impossible to answer. Let’s go with Frank Ocean. He is a real soulful
dude. His melodies are very cool and he tells a mean story.
If you could play anywhere in the world, where
would it be? If we could get to New York
that would be great. I would like to go there.
You are going to have a tour soon! How do you
feel? Great! We are working hard
right now trying to nail the live show. Its exciting as we haven’t had a
chance to play a lot of the songs off the new ep and we are excited to see
how they go down.
Any crazy stories like stalker fans, etc ? Of course not. We are
probably more stalkers ourselves rather than stalkees.I always follow people
from bands around. They don’t know I am there so it doesn’t bother them. I
know a lot about the daily lives of many Australian bands. I have a whole
lot of band-study-journals that I am in the process of getting published.
Tell us 5 random facts about your band 1. Dan and Tim like coffee
and like to talk about it 2. The rest of us don’t like
coffee and don’t like to talk about it 3. We need a marine pearl
white Ludwig floor tom 4. Sam doesn’t share fantales
and minties and lies about how many he has left. 5. There is a great lasagna
to be eaten just north of Holbrook. That isn’tnecessarily a fact about the band
but its worth more to the readers.
What or who
would you like to be reincarnated as? Randy marsh.
