Q&A with Warning Birds

Saturday, 30 June 2012

Warning Birds is an indie rock band from Western Australia . They currently working on their debut album and it should be ready next year for the release . You can relate to their music to Death Cab of Cutie as they are the winners of 2011 Western Australian Music Industry Association Rock Song of the Year Award

Check out the interview we did with Sam as the vocals

1. Who makes up your band?
Warning Birds are a four-piece. There’s myself, Sam Carmody, on vocals and guitar. Carmen Pepper on vocals and bass. Bensen Thomas on lead guitar and Tim Bates on Drums. We also have a fifth member, Alex Vickery, who is a multi-instrumentalist and key part of our live show. He plays violin, guitar, keys, tambourine and does backing vocals. You name it, he plays it, or could probably learn it in a couple lazy hours.

2. Where are you guys from?
We are largely based in Perth now but really we are from all over Western Australia. Carmen, Tim and I grew up in the country. We probably consider ourselves more of a WA band than a Perth band.

3. Who’s your music inspiration?
All of us come from different places, musically, and I think that is a really good thing. I’m really into song writers, like Paul Dempsey and Neil Finn. I grew up listening to Neil Young and Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, the list goes on and on. All the folk writers, basically. So for me it has always been about the song. Lyrics and vocal melodies. Bensen, on the other hand, is really into Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Mogwai; really rich, ambitious sounds and production. That tension between songs and sounds is a great thing for our band, I think. All four of us bring something to the rehearsal room that is now a part of our sound. If any one of us left, it wouldn’t be Warning Birds anymore.

4. Can you tell us how did your band form?
It all really started out as a solo project of mine. Bensen, who happens to be my first cousin, came and helped put some guitar and piano lines down in the recording studio. Then I came into contact with Carmen online and we listened to each other’s music. I loved her voice and asked if she’d be up to singing on the recording, so our team in the studio grew. I met Tim in McDonald’s. He was working the drive-thru really late one night and in between my order we got talking music. So we had a drummer. It all came together quite accidentally. We were never trying to create a band, but it became obvious pretty quickly to us that’s exactly what we were. It felt right.

5. What's the story behind your band's name?
Warning Birds is a name I used all the time as a teenager. It’s the name my friends and I would call birds we saw when we were surfing. We’d say they were trying to warn us there were sharks around.

6. We love "Sally". Can you guys tell us the story behind the song, just a little bit?
Sally is about a high school boy who has an affair with his teacher. His teacher is only young, a graduate. Her name is Sally. The song is really about how the boy can’t see the damage they are doing. When everyone finds out, her life is basically over. Her career is gone. Her reputation is ruined, and all he can see is his infatuation for her. He can’t see how her life has been turned upside down by the whole thing.

7. What kind of bands are guys into at the moment?
We are listening to a lot of Grimes at the moment. Also, Mogwai is getting a big listen. We love the soundscapes, the density of the production, and the mix of organic and synthetic sounds.

8. What are you working on at the moment?
We are currently recording our debut album. It should be ready for release by early next year.

9. If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why?
Right now, I’d say Feist. I love her song writing and her voice is beautiful. Bensen would probably say Jonsi from Sigur Ros, or a film score composer like Han Zimmer (Inception). Carmen would probably say Feist as well.

10. If you could play anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Coachella festival in California

11. Tell us 5 random facts about your band
i)Our first summer festival we played to no one: we opened the festival but the gates were
closed because of a truck being in the way or something. They opened just as we
finished.
ii) Carmen’s dog is named BJ. He’s awesome.
iii) Bensen would love to be living in Iceland.
iv) Carmen’s band nicknames are C Diddy or C Bomb
v) Tim sings in a choir

12. What or who would you like to be reincarnated as?
Fleetwood Mac
