Q&A with Endah N Rhesa

I just love the fact that Endah N Rhesa is actually a couple of husband and wife who created this band. This Indonesian duo pretty much produced music that's really chilling, calming and relaxing. It's acoustic indie-pop that would perfectly fit to listen when you're at the beach or at the mountain or anywhere that has beautiful scenery. The songs have beautiful and heartwarming lyrics. I especially love "When You Love Someone", it really hits me. The guitar play is really soft and simple, but you know, it touches your heart in a way. Endah's melodic and soft vocal perfectly create the tranquil vibe.

1. Who makes up your band?
Both of us made this duo.
2.  Where are you guys from?
We are from Indonesia. We married in December 5th 2009 and live together in Pamulang, Tangerang.

3. Who’s your music inspiration?
There are so many great musicians who inspired us. Such as Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Victor Wooten, Red Hot Chilli Pepper, John Mayer, Norah Jones, Bobby McFerrin. For local heroes: Bonita & the HusBand, Anda, Bondan Prakoso

4. Can you tell us how did your band formed?
We met in a rock band in 2003 and started to fall in love to each other. Endah resigned from the band because of different vision. Rhesa resigned too in the following year. We used to practice music together while dating. Actually, we were trying to find another personnel to join us, but it didn’t work, until Rhesa came up with the idea to make a duo. So, here we are now..

5. What do you do when you're stuck on writing songs? 
Watching movies, jamming with other musician, playing video games, or learning new things to improve our musical skills. We often spend our time together only for having a conversation about our dreams and imagination. It’s fun working with someone who you love and beside you always. 

6. Our favorite is "When You Love Someone". Can you guys tell us the story behind the song, just a little bit?
Hmm… it came up from a simple idea. We were wondering about a girl who braves to show her feeling to the man she loves. It’s hard… yes we know.. but it doesn’t seem wrong, worth to try. 

7. How do you describe your music?
Ballad. In dictionary, ballad means a story-telling (narrative) music. Yes, we love to share stories. Imagination is the secret.

8. What kind of bands are guys into at the moment?
Hmm.. we’ll always into Bela Fleck & The Flecktones music. But now, we’re exploring Oysterhead, Primus, Dave Matthew’s Band latest album, some rockabilly style like Brian Setzer.

9. What are you working on at the moment?
We are working on our 3rd album. We will record it soon. And preparing for OST movie Cita-citaku Setinggi Tanah directed by Eugene Panji.

10. If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why?
We still don’t know the answer yet. We would love to collaborate with any musician as long as we are comfortable with them. We’re looking for chemistry between us and other musician. Maybe it sounds tempting to collaborate with “The big-name” or “the star” but if there is no chemistry between us, it won’t be fun.

11. If you could play anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Africa and Nashville.

12. What's your best on-stage experience so far?
Hmm.. we don’t really remember about that so far. But it feels good when we can handle unpredictable situation while we’re on stage, for instance, had some spontaneously jamming when the electricity were shut down suddenly. Or change the broken string on stage, and having fun with the crowd. Actually, when you are on stage with someone who you love and trust…nothing better than that feeling.
